Antique cast iron fire back for fireplace: Thyrsus, crowns and vase
This antique cast iron fire back dates back to the 18th century. It is signed and numbered (something quite rare).
It is made in France and is in good condition. It is adorned with a pair of Thyrsus (stick representing a scepter decorated with ivy leaves and topped by a pine cone, major attribute of the Greek God Dionysus and its equivalent in Roman mythology, Bacchus).
They are topped by laurel wreaths. A motif of vase ends the whole piece highlighted by a beautiful frame in relief.
The Thyrsus is a mythological decorative motif that was highly appreciated during the reign of Napoleon.
