Exceptional cast iron chimney back: coat of arms and lion rampant
This antique cast iron chimney back dating from the 17th century is rare. Adorned with a thick moulded frame that surrounds the whole piece, it features a beautiful eyebrow shape. You can see embossed coats of arms on the central shield with 3 bends of which 2 are engrailed. On both sides of this coat of arms, a “lion rampant”, (upright lion on hind legs), with open jaw and protruding tongue. These lions hold the coat of arms which is topped by a beautiful count crown mounted with 9 beads.
The lion was considered a heraldic animal. In the Middle Ages, it was also considered as the king of beasts - in opposition to the eagle that was considered as the king of skies.
