Antique cast iron fire back for fireplace: Coat of arms of Henri IV ** SOLD

This very beautiful and rare antique cast iron fire back for fireplace is square and offers a very beautiful example of foundry work.

This cast iron fire back is nicely centered by the Coat of Arms of the Kings of France and Navarre. This coat of arms is chiefly attributed to the King Henri IV (1553-1610), first ruler of the Bourbons House and founder of the Capetian dynasty. He was also king of Navarre before his assumption of the throne of France.

This shield consists of two parts: on the left, 3 fleurs-de-lis (symbol of the kings of France), and on the right, the symbol of Navarre: gules with chains or linked in orle, cross and saltire, the center charged with an emerald proper.

This coat of arms is topped by a royal crown decorated with fleurs-de-lis. It is held by two “lions rampants” (upright lion in profile on hind legs) with open jaws and protruding tongues.

Below this coat of arms, we can clearly see the "L" letter for Louis XIII (son of Henri IV) at the crossing of an olive branch and a branch of laurel.
