Antique molded mantel in Jaumont stone (19th Century - Eastern France)

This antique 19th-century French mantelpiece was carved in Eastern France from the beautiful golden Jaumont stone (*).

This large stone mantel features a pair of fluted jambs on which rests an imposing lintel that acts as a shelf. This slightly arched lintel is very finely carved with moldings. The hearth line is highlighted by an opulent "sausage-like" mold.

(*) The stone of Jaumont is a beautiful limestone quarried near Metz (East of France). Its beautiful ochre/yellow color comes from the fact that this natural stone is mined in quarries located above disused iron mines. It is this iron oxide that gives it this unique "golden yellow" color.
