Antique Louis XIV style fireplace in Jaumont stone

This Louis XIV style antique fireplace was thoroughly sculpted and carved from the Jaumont stone (*).

It features a pair of slender, console-shaped jambs, adorned with carved vertical panels on their upper sections. They support a monolithic lintel. This molded lintel is further embellished with finely hand-sculpted details : a central six-pointed star encircled by a delicate ring, flanked by panels and fluted “asperge” ornaments above the jambs.

This elegant antique fireplace bears witness to the architectural style of the 17th century.

(*) Jaumont stone is a beautiful limestone quarried near Metz, in the Moselle department (Eastern France), just above old iron mines. Its warm golden-yellow hue comes from natural iron oxide.
