Baroque style antique cast-iron fireback: Venus

This wonderful antique square cast iron fireback is large and of French origin. It dates to the 19 Century and is in very good condition.

This Baroque style fireback offers a depiction of Venus holding her mirror in a hand and Vesta’s light in another hand. We can see beautiful motifs of foliage around her.

According to Roman mythology, Venus is the goddess of beauty, seduction and fertility. She is also the mother of Cupid, Hermaphroditus and Aeneas the Trojan hero. She is depicted here with one of her attributes: the mirror but also the light of Vesta goddess of the hearth, home and family.
