Antique cast iron fire back for fireplace: Pillars and Saint Andrew's Cross
This superb cast iron fire back is large and square. It is surrounded on 3 of its edges by a thin molded frame in relief. Two large carved bowling pin-shaped columns in relief appear in the center. They are centered by Saint Andrew's Cross (cross in the form of “X” which would have been used to crucify Saint Andrew). As for the pair of pillars, they are surely the representation of the pillars of Hercules, a symbol of strength in Greek antiquity.
