Beautiful antique Pompadour Style marble mantle
This beautiful antique mantle was carved and hand-sculpted in the 19th century into a beautiful red marble richly veined with white and black veins. This Pompadour Style mantle is inspired by the sinuous lines of the Louis XV Style.
The Pompadour mantles were made from the middle of the 19th century to improve the interiors of Haussmann apartments. They are characterized by a curved lintel, a serpentine tablet, a torus (circle) on the lintel highlighted by fine hand-carved oblongs.
The jambs of this mantle feature moldings on the outside creating an impression of depth. The central motif inscribed on the frieze can be also found on the curved jambs and on the upper parts of the jambs. The tablet is fine and features a typical serpentine form. The jambs rest on foot blocks.
